What's New in Facial Plastic Surgery
Michael E. Villano, MD, Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon in Central Oregon

Question: What are some alternatives to a surgical facelift? I can’t afford the downtime at this point in my life, but I would still like to have some correction of my sagging and aged skin.

Answer: There are quite a number of non-surgical options available for today’s busy patient. BOTOX Cosmetic and injectable dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and restore volume, respectively.

To address mid-facial and jowl/neck laxity there is a procedure called ReFirme which aims to tighten your skin while increasing collagen production. This is accomplished in a series of treatments over several months for optimal results. We are a certified ReFirme Center and offer a complimentary first “test treatment” for our patients.

Another option is addressing fine lines and discoloration of the skin which often ages our appearance. We offer OBAGI Medical prescription skin care which stimulates your skin to act and look younger and healthier.

Oftentimes, combination therapy with the above mentioned will produce drastic enough results to avoid the need for a surgical intervention.

Question: What is a non-surgical Rhinoplasty?

Answer: A non-surgical Rhinoplasty utilizes new generation injectable dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse, to carefully reduce the look of a nasal hump and/or augment the nasal tip. The benefit of a non-surgical Rhinoplasty is that patients get to “test drive” their new look without undergoing surgery. The results last from 10 to 20 months depending on the filler used. Also, a non-surgical Rhinoplasty leaves the nasal cartilages and bone completely untouched. You can see pictures of patients who have had a non-surgical Rhinoplasty on our website, www.CascadeFaces.com.

Question: Dr. Villano, I have heard of a weekend face lift, or thread lift, but what exactly does this mean, and is it truly a replacement for a formal face lift?

Answer: A weekend face lift or thread lift is referring to a procedure that involves placing medical grade threads with either local anesthesia, or sedation, into the mid-face, lower face, or neck to lift sagging tissue. The benefits of this type of lift is that there is minimal bruising and downtime. Thus, our patients who have busy lifestyles are able to achieve a refreshed and lifted look while being able to return to work after 2-4 days.

A thread lift is not a replacement for a formal Rhytidectomy (face lift). Typically, results last 3-5 years, but patients do continue to age, and as a result the threads do not lift the tissue buy the same mechanism as a formal face lift does giving less of a longer term result.

The benefit of the thread lift is truly its ability to obtain great results with minimal downtime.
